The Jupiter Review
The Commute
Luke Bateman
Each day as we walked home from work,
We crossed a muddy field
And saw the horse.

She clip-clopped back and forth
From the north corner to the south,
A mud-flecked pendulum.

Oh, how we’d giggle at her stuck in that path
Like a glitching video game character,
The programming askew.

It was unnatural, seeing a free creature
Trapped in a repetitive, meaningless movement,
Each day as we walked home from work.
